Missouri State University in collaboration with Edu-Safe USA has developed training to assist schools with preparing staff to act as a First Responder in an emergency event when seconds count.
In an emergency where student safety is in jeopardy, staff must respond decisively. Knowledge is the key. Research has shown when individuals have knowledge, they are more confident in their ability. True emergencies are infrequent but when they do occur, staff must be prepared to respond efficiently and effectively. This workshop will include the following:

- Preparing and speak with students about what to do in an emergency
- Creating ownership in the classroom and self-auditing the room for safety
- Helping substitute employees prepare for an emergency
- Preparing staff in how to prepare and respond when under stress
- Preparing for and responding to an emergency outside the classroom
- Responding to a violent and/or armed individual
This workshop will come with resources such as templates and ready to use strategies.

Dennis Lewis is the President of Edu-Safe LLC, a school safety training and consulting organization founded in 1999. His primary focus is developing "Best Practice" strategies for enhancing student and staff safety. Dennis provides cutting edge training, safety and readiness assessments, and consults with attorneys as an expert defense witness on school safety litigation. He is a published author on a number of safety and security topics and is the Past President of the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officers. From 1990 to 2006 Dennis was the Director of Public Safety for the largest school district in Missouri, overseeing 54 educational sites and 26,000 students.
