The 12-week Essentials of Effective Supervision course provides a strong knowledge base for first-line supervisors, managers and team leaders.  This series is designed to provide new supervisors, and those aspiring to become supervisors, with a unique blend of knowledge, skills and strategies in the areas needed to effectively and efficiently supervise others.  Participants will immediately put their new skills into practice.  The topics covered each week are core issues proven to be the keys for supervisory success.  Supervisors at all levels need to handle these areas with confidence and authority to effectively deal with and manage the employees they supervise. 

Weekly Program Schedule

Session 1
The Changing Role of the Frontline Supervisor
 - What happened to motivation and the "work ethic?"  Don't worry its still here!  How to enrich jobs, deal with organizational change and how to manage employees through it for positive performance.  A comparison of the traditional role to contemporary demands for supervising today's worker. 

Session 2
Managing Diversity in the Workplace -
Understanding the changes of the American workforce will provide awareness for increased communication and a more cohesive work team.

Session 3
Creating High-Performance Teams
 - Identify strategies in teambuilding skills and maintaining effective team communications.

Session 4
Dealing with Conflict & Disciplinary Procedures
 - Understand the positives and negatives of conflict, how to work effectively within both and steps to defuse.  Uncover your personal conflict style.  Also learn the keys to conducting proper discipline and documentation.

Session 5
Leadership and Motivation
 - What is leadership vs. management? Review your leadership style and how to apply leadership in today's workplace to increase and maintain employee motivation.

Session 6
Legal Responsibilities of the Supervisor
 -  State and federal laws pertaining to employment, sexual harassment, workers' compensation, discrimination and the supervisor's role in preventing adverse consequences.

Session 7
Effective Communication -
Learn how to communicate to build trust, teamwork, consensus and meet performance objectives.  Self assessments will help you uncover your communication style and potential barriers your style may be creating.

Session 8
The Supervisors Role in Performance Appraisals
 - Gain specific steps and guidelines in developing and using job-related work performance objectives, standards and performance plans.  Understand how you can positively impact your employee's formal appraisals.

Session 9
Dealing with Stress, Time Management & Delegation - 
Learn how to manage interruptions, set clear goals, eliminate the 7 most deadly time-wasters and the cure to procrastination.

Session 10
Orienting & Onboarding New Employees
 - What to include in the orientation of new workers, how to structure OJT to achieve maximum results.

Session 11
Safety and Security Issues
 - The supervisor's responsibility in OSHA, record keeping, and safety and security issues for the new millennium; ergonomics and work place violence.

Session 12
Planning for Results & Problem Solving
 - Establishing a vision, setting goals, overcoming obstacles, developing an action plan, controlling and evaluating.

This program will run for 12 consecutive weeks from Tuesday, February 11, 2025 through Tuesday, May 6, 2025, skipping the week of March 18, 2025.

Tim Baltes

Tim Baltes photoTim Baltes is a seasoned trainer and human resource professional with experience in the manufacturing, healthcare and gaming industries.  He has over 13 years experience in performance management, strategic planning, employee relations, and employee development skills training.    Tim's programs are trademarked by his enthusiastic and interactive style which maximizes participant learning retention.   Tim's sessions assist participants to establish useable action plans to sharpen communication skills, improve individual and team relationships and build positive attitudes to create top-performing organizations. 

Tim holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Wright State University and a Masters degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Missouri State University.  He is an alum of Leadership Springfield, and currently serves on both Springfield Area Human Resources (SAHRA) and the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Boards.

Dale McCoyDale McCoy is a Training & Organization Development Practitioner, specializing in human performance improvement and leadership cultivation through learning and development strategies that yield measurable, data-driven, client-specific business results.

After managing a multi-million dollar retail sales operation in Los Angeles, CA for eight years, Dale gained extensive experience as a Human Resources Development Specialist with MCI Telecommunications, and as Manager of Training & Development with UnitedHealthcare Operations.

Before launching his independent practice in July, 2001, Dale was Professional Services Manager of Training Development for Ineto, Inc., a web-based customer relations technology solution company headquartered in Austin, Texas.

Dale is a certified Zenger-Miller Master Trainer and a certified facilitator of Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.  He is certified by the Consulting Psychologists Press to administer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and by Personnel Decisions International (PDI), to administer the 360-degree Profiler.

Dale is a graduate of Drury University in Springfield, MO, and has a Master of Science degree in Education & Online Teaching and Learning from California State University East Bay.

Dale is a member of the American Society of Training & Development, as well as the Society of Human Resources Management and the Organization Development Network.

Dale lives in Springfield, Missouri with his wife, Mary, their two children, Max and Chelsea, and their dogs, Roxy and Nelson.

Scot is a seasoned business administration and human resource professional with over 20 years experience with a special emphasis in compensation, performance management, conflict resolution, strategic planning, workers' compensation, safety and training and development. Scot has held upper management positions with profit and non-profit organizations in manufacturing, hospitality and charitable giving.

Scot is an enthusiastic trainer able to deliver high impact training to front-line, mid and senior level employees. He has designed and delivered multiple management and safety programs resulting in cost reduction and performance improvement success across several disciplines including orientation programs, performance management, effective interviewing, employment law and supervision. Scot has a special aptitude in synthesizing complex employment law situations and implementing effective strategies that work.

Scot holds a B.S. degree in Human Resource Management from Missouri State University.
